Thomas Ames Jr. Photographer

THOMAS AMES JR. learned his craft in New York City, first as assistant to still-life photographer David Hedrich and subsequently as assistant to "illustration" photographer Denny Tillman. He then spent three years as lighting and camera director for Grossman Brothers Productions, making 3-D animated commercials, before fleeing to northern New England, where he opened his own studio in 1987.

Tom is as adept with a fly rod or a pair of sai as he is with a camera. He is the author/photographer of Fishbugs and the Hatch Guide to New England Streams, hailed by Fly Fisherman Magazine as "the most useful and informative book for eastern fly fishers since Art Flick's Streamside Guide in 1947." His newest book for fly fishers, The Eastern Book of Caddisflies, is due in stores in late 2008. Tom is also a husband, the father of three extraordinary children, and a Black Belt student and senior instructor of Shorinryu karate.
